2009-10 will be my last year of teaching. I superannuated in June, but I continue to work on a contract that takes me to June 30 of 2010. I’m still enjoying the work I do, which is travelling from school to school helping teachers incorporate technology into their classrooms, although I have to admit some mornings the drive isn’t all that appealing.
Just a week ago, I left the house around 7:20 on a -30 degree morning, and, half-way to Consul, a 150 Km drive, I noticed how windy it was. That’s when it occured to me that the buses might not be running that morning, and there would be no students to work with when I got there. As it turned out, most of the buses in the division were cancelled that day, but when I got to Consul, it was “only” -24 and calm, so nearly all of their kids were there. It’s not uncommon for me to travel through at least three weather patterns on my way to a school, which makes for some interesting driving. It’s an immense division.
I am still running the karate club in Gull Lake although I now only travel to Maple Creek once every other week. Karate continues to be my main activity outside of work.
This summer was largely occupied with renovations to the kitchen, and I hope in my retirement to have more time for that kind of thing. After years of working mostly with my brain, it’s kind of nice to be able to do something with my hands again. My first major retirement project will have to be to build a garage/shop so that I have some place to that kind of work, though. This summer’s project was done entirely in the back yard and in the basement. Not ideal.
